How long can a Toyota RAV4 last? Of the 16-plus-year-old RAV4s Canadians bring to Clutch, the typical one shows about 235,000 km, and one in five has passed 300,000 km. Only the Honda CR-V keeps that pace. Over the past two years, Clutch has appraised more than 18,000 RAV4s and over 100,000 other compact SUVs across Canada, and put about 1,300 RAV4s through its 210-point inspection. Here's what that data says about how far a RAV4 goes, what wears out, and what it costs to keep one on the road.
Vehicle condition insights in this guide come from inspection records logged by Clutch’s reconditioning team.
How many kilometres does a Toyota RAV4 actually last?
Of the RAV4s Canadians offer to Clutch at 16 or more years old, the typical one has about 235,000 km on it. Around 43% have passed 250,000 km and roughly one in five has passed 300,000. Across same-age compact SUVs, those shares are 38% and 17%. Only the CR-V matches the RAV4's staying power at the top of the class.
| Age of vehicle | Typical km (RAV4) | Past 250,000 km: RAV4 | Past 250,000 km: class average | Past 300,000 km: RAV4 | Past 300,000 km: class average |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 to 12 years | 179,000 | 16.0% | 14.4% | 5.6% | 4.7% |
| 13 to 15 years | 205,000 | 26.4% | 24.0% | 10.2% | 8.6% |
| 16+ years | 235,000 | 43.1% | 38.2% | 19.7% | 17.4% |
Customer-declared mileage at appraisal, past 24 months. Sampling margins are under ±2.5 points on every figure shown. The class average includes the CR-V, which is the one SUV that matches the RAV4 here.
Another way to see it: one in three of the 2010 to 2012 RAV4s Canadians bring us has already passed 250,000 km, and one in eight has passed 300,000. Drivers put similar distance on every model in this class, around 16,000 to 18,000 km a year, so the gap you see above is wear tolerance, not driving habits.
One honest caveat. These are the RAV4s people offered to sell us, not every RAV4 ever built. We can't count the cars that never come up for sale. What we can say is that within the same stream of vehicles, measured the same way, the RAV4 and CR-V sit at the top in every age band, and the ordering doesn't move.
Is a RAV4 with 100,000 km still worth buying?
Usually, yes. Between 80,000 and 120,000 km, RAV4s clear Clutch's 210-point inspection about 88% of the time, against 79% for the rest of the class. Held to the same age and mileage, a RAV4 fails our inspection at roughly half the rate of the class's domestic and Korean rivals. The CR-V, CX-5 and Forester do the same, so it's a Japanese compact SUV advantage, not a RAV4 monopoly.
| Mileage when we buy the vehicle | RAV4 pass rate | Closest Japanese rivals (CR-V, CX-5, Forester) | Rest of class |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 40,000 km | 95.7% (92.8 to 97.5) | 98.3% (97.0 to 99.1) | 97.1% (96.1 to 97.9) |
| 40,000 to 80,000 km | 93.6% (90.9 to 95.5) | 93.4% (91.8 to 94.8) | 89.8% (88.5 to 90.9) |
| 80,000 to 120,000 km | 87.8% (84.3 to 90.6) | 84.4% (81.9 to 86.7) | 78.7% (76.9 to 80.4) |
| 120,000 to 160,000 km | 72.8% (62.9 to 80.8) | 81.3% (75.5 to 86.0) | 67.5% (63.5 to 71.2) |
Share of vehicles bought for retail that pass the 210-point inspection, Clutch purchases since 2023. Ranges in brackets are 95% confidence intervals. Competitors are grouped, not named with individual rates, per our reporting rules.
Notice the last row. Between 120,000 and 160,000 km, the RAV4 trails its Japanese rivals. That sample is smaller and the range is wide, so treat it as directional, but we're not going to hide it. Even in that band, the RAV4 still beats the rest of the class.
Our inspection data covers vehicles up to about 10 years old, because Clutch doesn't retail vehicles beyond that age. For how far the older ones keep going, the mileage table above is the evidence.
What actually wears out on a high-mileage RAV4?
Bushings, brakes and gaskets, not the engine or transmission. In the inspection notes our mechanics log on every rejected vehicle, engine and transmission problems account for about one in nine RAV4 rejections. Among rejected compact SUVs outside the Japanese group, powertrain problems account for roughly one in four. A RAV4 ages in its suspension and its wear items, and that's the cheaper way to age.
| What our mechanics find on rejected RAV4s | How often | What it looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Suspension wear | Most common | Cracked or separated trailing-arm and control-arm bushings, torn ball-joint boots |
| Brakes and surface rust | Common | Rusted rotors, seized hardware, worn pads on all four corners |
| Leaks and seepage | Common | Timing-cover seep, valve-cover gaskets, the odd rusted exhaust flange |
| The economics call | Occasional | Nothing is broken, but the repair list costs more than the price of the car supports |
| Engine or transmission faults | Rare | About one in nine RAV4 rejections; among rejected rivals outside the Japanese group, closer to one in four |
That list is also your test-drive checklist. If you're looking at a RAV4 with 120,000 km or more:
- Listen for clunks over speed bumps and potholes at low speed. That's usually bushings, the RAV4's signature wear point.
- Watch for wandering steering or uneven front tire wear, another suspension tell.
- Look at the brake rotors through the wheels. Heavy rust scoring means a brake job is close.
- Check the front of the engine for oil seep around the timing cover, and under the valve cover. It's rarely urgent, but it's a negotiating point.
- Start it cold and listen. Engine trouble on a RAV4 is rare, which is exactly why you should walk away from one that knocks or hesitates.
What does it cost to keep an older RAV4 on the road?
About what the class costs. On vehicles Clutch reconditions for retail, a RAV4's reconditioning bill runs below the class median up to six years old and sits right at the class median at 7 to 10 years. An older RAV4 needs work like anything else its age. The difference is what kind: wear items far more often than major mechanical repair, which is why more of them are worth fixing at all.
And here's the part a RAV4 shopper deserves to hear straight. Once a vehicle has passed the 210-point inspection and been reconditioned, our post-sale records show RAV4s generate protection plan claims at about the same rate as their peers. We checked it two ways, among all buyers and among buyers with a plan, and the answer didn't change. The RAV4's real edge is in the odds that a given used car is still worth buying and fixing. After reconditioning, it's a reconditioned car. Buy the specific car, not the badge.

Which used RAV4 years are the best buy?
2019 and newer. That's when the current generation arrived, and our shop data shows the step: 2021 to 2024 RAV4s clear our inspection about 95% of the time, 2019 and 2020 about 89%, and 2017 and 2018 about 83%. Part of that gap is simply age and mileage at purchase, so read it as a pattern, not a verdict on any single car.
| Model years | Share that clears our 210-point inspection |
|---|---|
| 2017 to 2018 | 83% |
| 2019 to 2020 | 89% |
| 2021 to 2024 | 95% |

How we know
Everything on this page comes from two Clutch datasets, and each one answers a different question. Neither is perfect, so here's exactly what each covers and where its blind spot sits.
| Dataset | What it is | What it answers | Its blind spot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Appraisals | 18,000+ RAV4s and 100,000+ other compact SUVs offered to Clutch over 24 months, with customer-declared mileage | How far these SUVs actually get driven in Canada | Only counts vehicles someone decided to sell |
| Inspections | About 1,300 RAV4s Clutch bought for retail since 2023, each through the 210-point inspection, with mechanic notes, reconditioning records and post-sale claims | What condition they arrive in, what fails, and what it costs | Covers vehicles up to about 10 years old, since Clutch doesn't retail older ones |
A few rules we held ourselves to. Every rate on this page sits on at least 50 vehicles, and the big mileage tables carry margins under ±2.5 points. Inspection comparisons hold age and mileage constant before comparing models, so an older-arriving competitor isn't punished for its age. Competitor results appear as group bands, never as a named rival with a rate.
The findings that cut against the RAV4 stayed in: the 120,000 to 160,000 km band where it trails its Japanese rivals, and the post-sale claim rates that show no RAV4 advantage after reconditioning. The failure-cause themes come from the inspection notes our mechanics log during the 210-point inspection, spot-checked against sampled vehicles, rather than a formal engineering study, so treat them as what our shop sees, not a defect census. For how every brand performs across our whole inspection program, see the Clutch Used Car Reliability Report.
Thinking of buying a used RAV4?
The data says the RAV4 earns its reputation, and it also says the badge alone isn't a guarantee. The car in front of you is what matters. Browse Clutch's Toyota RAV4 listings to shop ones that already passed the 210-point inspection. Every vehicle comes with a free CARFAX report, a 10-day money-back guarantee, and optional Protection Plans, so the specific car you buy is the sure thing.
FAQs About How Long a Toyota RAV4 Can Last
What should I check when test driving a used RAV4?
Focus on the front suspension, the RAV4's signature wear area in our shop data. Listen for clunks over bumps, feel for loose or wandering steering, and check for uneven front tire wear. On hybrids, confirm the battery has been inspected. A worn control arm is a routine repair, but you want to price it in before buying.
Are older RAV4s reliable?
Yes, relative to their peers. In Clutch's inspection data, 7 to 10 year old RAV4s clear our retail standard far more often than the average SUV of that age. The trade-off is more reconditioning, mostly wear items like suspension arms, brakes, and tires.
Is it worth buying a RAV4 with 200,000 km?
Often, yes. One in three of the 2010 to 2012 RAV4s Canadians bring to Clutch has passed 250,000 km, so 200,000 km is not the end of the road. Judge the specific car: look for a strong service history, no accident damage, and healthy suspension and brakes, the RAV4's usual wear points. A pre-purchase inspection is still a smart idea.
Do Toyota RAV4s rust easily?
Not especially, and rarely where it matters most. In the inspection notes our mechanics log, rust on a RAV4 usually shows up on wear parts like brake rotors and exhaust hardware rather than in the structure. Canadian winters are hard on any vehicle, so regular underbody washing is still worth doing.
